Glimmer of Desire, Central Art Museum, Hangzhou

Cigarettes—ubiquitous yet paradoxical—embody both allure and addiction, making them a potent metaphor for our entanglement with consumer culture. Glimmers of Excess unveils artist Hugh Leung Siu Fung’s sharp yet playful critique of material desire, exposing the unseen narratives and tensions that shape our choices and identities.

Spanning six major series, the exhibition takes viewers on a journey through the seductive power of commodities, our emotional bonds with material objects, and the lasting imprint of consumption on memory. By juxtaposing beauty with decay, Leung prompts us to reflect on the forces of desire and value in a world governed by market forces.

At once an artistic inquiry and a critical lens on consumer culture, Glimmers of Excess invites audiences to reconsider the aesthetics and consequences of the everyday.
